NOM-001-SCFI-2018-Electronic Safety Testing

The commercialization of electronic, electrical, and household appliances in Mexico is strictly governed by NOM-024-SCFI-2013. This Mexican Official Standard establishes the mandatory commercial information that must accompany these products, as well as the requirements for manuals and warranties. For international manufacturers and importers, strict adherence to these guidelines is essential to ensure that products move efficiently through customs and reach the consumer without administrative setbacks.

Scope and Application of NOM 024 SCFI 2013

This standard applies to a wide range of products, including new, refurbished, or second-hand electronic and electrical goods sold within the national territory. The objective is to provide the consumer with clear and truthful information regarding the product’s identity, its electrical characteristics, and the legal protections available through warranties.

Mandatory Commercial Information for Electronics

All products falling under this category must display specific data prominently on the packaging or the product itself. The information must be in Spanish and remain legible. Key requirements include:

  • Product Description: A clear identification of the item, such as “Television” or “Electric Blender.”
  • Brand and Model: The specific commercial identifiers of the device.
  • Importer and Manufacturer Data: The name, address, and fiscal identification (RFC) of the party responsible for the product in Mexico.
  • Country of Origin: A clear indication of where the device was manufactured.

Electrical Specification and Warranty Requirements

Beyond basic identification, NOM-024-SCFI-2013 places heavy emphasis on the technical safety and operational data that protects the consumer and the electrical infrastructure.

Standardized Electrical Ratings

Labels must include the nominal electrical specifications required for the correct operation of the device. This typically includes:

  • Nominal Voltage: Expressed in Volts (e.g., 127V).
  • Frequency: Expressed in Hertz (e.g., 60Hz).
  • Power Consumption: Expressed in Watts or Amperes.

Manuals and Legal Warranties

One of the most rigorous aspects of this NOM is the requirement for instructions and warranties. Manuals must be provided in Spanish and include all necessary warnings for safe operation. Furthermore, the warranty must be clearly stated, detailing its duration (which cannot be less than three months for electrical appliances and one year for complex electronics), the scope of coverage, and the procedure for making a claim within Mexico.
